"Just take a break."

"You need to slow down."

It sounds so simple, doesn't it? But if you’ve been operating on high alert for months or years, those words don't feel like helpful advice - they feel like a threat.

The truth is, for many of us, our systems don't feel safe enough to slow down. We want to stop, but a deeper part of us is terrified of what happens if we do.

The Cycle of "High Alert"

We like to think we are in total control of our choices. However, about 90% of our behavior is actually driven by our unconscious mind - the part of us that handles survival without us having to think about it.

When you’ve been stressed for a long time, your nervous system gets stuck in "mobilization mode." Think of this as your body’s internal alarm system. Even when you’re sitting on the sofa, your body is chemically prepared to run or fight.

You can’t "think" your way out of this state. A more primitive part of your brain is in the driver’s seat, and it believes that "busyness" is the only thing keeping you safe. It views rest as a dangerous luxury you can't afford.

The Worthiness Trap

In my work, I support so many women who feel incredibly frustrated with themselves. They know something is "off," but they don't know how to stop.

This is sadly all too common. We’ve been conditioned to attach our worth and value to our output - how much we do, how much we achieve, and how well we take care of everyone else. Because we aren't taught how to work with our nervous systems, we don't know how to function sustainably. We just keep pushing until the wheels fall off.

Even in my own journey, I still find myself getting trapped in thought loops from time to time. The difference now? The amount of time I stay stuck has greatly reduced. By using a regular practice of nervous system regulation, I’ve learned how to "drop down" from the noise of my mind into the safety of my body.

My Reflection: "I Couldn't Stop"

I know this feeling intimately. This past weekend, I was recording a video about my own experience with burnout back in 2010. While listening back, I heard myself say: "I couldn't stop."

Back then, I had never even heard the term "burnout," let alone understood how the nervous system works. I felt such a heavy weight of responsibility that I kept my foot pinned to the accelerator. I had tunnel vision - I could only see the next task. That refusal to stop resulted in me needing months off work because my body finally made the decision for me. It simply ran out of fuel.

Understanding the 5 Main Stages of Burnout

It’s easy to let the buzz of ambition sweep you into a state of permanent "high alert," where your nervous system gets stuck in a loop of fight or flight. We start off driven, but can (if left unchecked) hit a tipping point where we lose the ability to switch off, sliding from simple tiredness to exhaustion and (in the worst cases) total burnout.

To stop this, we need intentional practices to drop out of high activation and regulate.

By stepping away from the constant pressure and into activities that bring us back into our bodies openning up our "window of presence" where we can actually breathe. This isn't just about resting; it’s about training your nervous system to be more agile, so you can move between hard work and deep recovery without getting stuck in a survival state. True resilience comes from knowing how to recalibrate.

Finding a New Way Forward

In the coming months, I’ll be sharing insights and tools to help you tune into your body and meet its foundational fuel needs. It can feel like a minefield when you're starting out, but I’m here to help guide you through it.

We have to teach our bodies that the "emergency" is a false alarm. This starts with regulation - helping your body find its way back to a balanced state through small safety signals, like deep breathing or simply feeling your feet on the floor. Getting out of our busy minds and back into our bodies.
